Today's veterinarian is dedicated to protecting the health of both animals and humans. Veterinarians are highly educated and skilled in preventing, diagnosing and treating animal health problems. Their knowledge and training extends to a number of closely-related areas, so veterinarians are often involved in more than animal medicine. Today, more than 8,000 veterinarians are professionally active in Canada. They provide a wide variety of services in private practice, education and research, regulatory veterinary medicine, public health, private industry and other specialized services. Some commonly asked questions: Q: What should I be interested in if I want to be a veterinarian? A: You should be interested in: working with animals, animal welfare, working with people, science, biology, figuring out how things work and figuring out why things aren't working. Q: What are some of the things I'll need to be able to do as a veterinarian? A: You will need to: analyze; communicate; empathize; handle animals of different sizes and temperaments; manage staff; keep detailed and accurate records; manage inventories; keep up to date with veterinary research and communicate both happy and sad news to your clients. 3
