All antimicrobial use can lead to resistance.
Since antimicrobials sold through an LMO are not under direct veterinary supervision, they
could be used improperly and thereby be part of or contribute to animal and human health
safety issues (the extra label drug use problem.)
OVMA supports the position that veterinarians be the sole distributors of all veterinary injectable
and water soluble pharmaceuticals and biologicals, and that these medications be administered
only under veterinary supervision. Veterinarians would then be professionally responsible for the
prudent use of these products.
